Launch of SPG 2022

The 2021/22 edition of the Tasmanian Seasonal Produce Guide was launched by the Hon. Guy Barnett, Minister for Primary Industries and Water and Scott Price, President, Fruit Growers Tasmania at 12.30pm on 8 December at The Berry Patch, Turners Beach. Just in time for the fresh fruit season.

Fruit Growers Tasmania CEO Peter Cornish said, “The Tasmanian Seasonal Produce Guide links producers directly with consumers. Supporting our growers through this direct consumer engagement, to ensure their safe, healthy and premium quality produce is enjoyed here in the State, is the aim of this annual guide.

“Tasmanians have shown during the pandemic they want to get out and support local producers. The guide showcases our growers, cider makers and honey and other producers who open direct to the public.

“With borders reopening on 15 December there will be increasing numbers of visitors travelling around Tasmania, so this is the ideal time for the guide to be out there. Research shows visitors, and locals alike, have a strong interest in eating healthy Tasmanian grown and produced food, meaning they are seeking opportunities to buy and eat quality food and support local producers.”

Figures recently released show the total farm gate value of fruit increased by 22.1 per cent to $281 million in 2019-20.

President of Fruit Growers Tasmania, Scott Price added, “The Tasmanian fruit sector continues to expand in both value and offering, with our industry growing across all the major fruits. Growth means more investment, more employment and more production.

“The fruit industry as a whole will continue to play a significant role in the ongoing prosperity of the State, and particularly in relation to the Tasmanian Government’s target to grow the farm gate value of Tasmania’s agriculture to $10 billion by 2050.”

Over 8,000 copies of the Tasmanian Seasonal Produce Guide will be distributed to consumers including locals and tourists throughout the State as well as online on the Fruit Growers Tasmania website.
