On 11 June, cherry growers and key industry stakeholders came together in Jericho for Fruit Growers Tasmania’s Cherry Growing Workshop which focused on soil health, pollination and orchard management.
The day featured a range of practical and informative presentations, providing growers with the latest research, insights and ideas to help optimise their cherry production systems.
The workshop began with a presentation from Marek Matusek from AgLogic, who explored the importance of understanding soil health and using data to support decision making.
One of the highlights of the day was the grower discussion panel, hosted by Jess Fearnley-Pattison and featuring growers Brent Mcclintock, Nic Hansen and Andrew Hall.
Raylea Rowbottom, from Seed Purity, presented on exciting pollination research investigating the use of Eristalis tenax (hoverflies) in cherry orchards.
Growers also heard from Dr Leticia Reis, a tree crop physiologist with TIA, who shared first season results from the Optimising Protected Cherry Production project, a rain cover research trial conducted at Calthorpe Orchard in partnership with grower Brent Mcclintock.
The day concluded with practical demonstrations at two soil pits at Reid’s Honeywood Orchards, reinforcing the importance of understanding soil profile characteristics.
