Multi-lingual harvest worker induction videos now available

Fruit Growers Tasmania | Wednesday, 20 October 2021, 9.00am

Fruit producers now have access to new safety induction videos in ten different languages to help train and induct new harvest workers.

Produced by Fruit Growers Tasmania in collaboration with Safe Farming Tasmania, these resources were made possible through the support of the WorkCover Tasmania Board through the Healthier, Safer Productive Workplaces Grant.

Fruit Growers Tasmania CEO, Peter Cornish, said “We’re delighted to have this important resource available for our growers to use as part of their induction process for new workers.

“It’s the ideal time to provide this resource just as our growers are gearing up for another busy harvest season with harvesting of the first fruit of the new season expected to commence in the next couple of weeks, and continuing for the next eight months.

“Each year Tasmanian fruit growers induct more than 8,000 people for seasonal harvest roles – it’s a massive task.  They already do a fantastic job ensuring these people can work safely in our orchards and farms across the state and hopefully these videos will help make that work even safer.

“The fruit industry’s workforce is very inclusive being made up of people from many different backgrounds.  Having these videos available in ten different languages reflects that diversity and will help ensure these key safety messages are widely understood.

“We very much appreciate the support that the WorkCover Tasmania Board has provided for this project and the assistance from our colleagues at Safe Farming Tasmania.”

The video resources are designed for workers from diverse backgrounds, each resource uses short video clips and simple text to help staff familiarise themselves with harvest work activities, farm hazards and general farm safety principles.

Videos are available in ten different languages including English, French, Portuguese, Tetum, Samoan, Tongan, Hindi, Punjabi, Chinese and Korean.

Employers can also access an optional 5-minute quiz (English only) to test learning outcomes. Successful completion of this quiz will result in a certificate of completion from the Tasmanian Fruit Industry Induction Program.

The videos can be viewed on the Fruit Growers Tasmania website - https://www.fruitgrowerstas.org.au/induction-videos/
