FGT are running several projects aimed at strengthening and developing Tasmania's fruit industry and export capability.
Fruit Industry Biosecurity
FGT are working with government and industry stakeholders to strengthen the biosecurity of Tasmania's fruit industry and berry industries. The project will feature development of biosecurity information resources, engagement activities, and training workshops.
Biosecurity materials developed in this project include:
- pest information kits for pomefruit, stonefruit and berries
- in-field pest ID kits for crop monitors and harvest team supervisors
- pest ID posters for packing sheds and tea rooms
- an incursion-response manual to help growers response to any future biosecurity incursions
- fruit industry on-farm biosecurity implementation guide
FGT staff will be coordinating practical training workshops tailored to the specific biosecurity needs of Tasmania's pomefruit, stonefruit and berry growers. These workshops will feature national and international experts with hands-on experience managing these pests.
Horticultural Export Development
FGT are working with government and industry stakeholders to promote development of Tasmania's horticultural exports. Run by FGT, the project will support aspiring and existing export fruit, nut and vegetable producers to explore export opportunities, develop export trade connections and make their business ‘export-ready’.
Project strategic priorities
As part of this project, FGT will be running a series of activities over the next 3 years to help growers develop export skills, navigate government requirements, explore key markets of interest and develop market linkages. These activities will focus on 5 key areas to improve assist with Tasmanian horticultural export development. These are:
Improving market awareness (IMA)
These activities provide growers and exports with information on commodity and market trends to identify trends and opportunities. Activities in this area include annual debriefs on state, national and international market trends, as well as opportunities for in-season market updates to growers.
Creating market linkages (CML)
These activities help growers develop contacts and linkages with buyers and importers in priority markets. Activities include inbound and outbound trade missions, and attending international tradeshows.
Developing export readiness (DER)
Activities in this area aim to help new growers develop the knowledge and skills needed to manage agrifood export risks, and to help existing growers improve their skills. Activities include workshops, field days, and information sessions.
Supporting export trade (SET)
These activities aim to help new and existing exporters understand and navigate government requirements including export accreditations, freight requirements, export permits, product inspections, mandatory phytosanitary treatments, QA requirements. FGT staff also liaise with Dept. Agriculture representatives to resolve grower issues and keep product moving.
Improving export markets (IEM)
Activities in this area seek to improve market conditions for Tasmanian growers looking to export products into international markets. Activities include regional branding activities, meetings with national and international government representatives.
